Edmonton Journal preview Doctor Who - Amy's Choice

From Edmonton Journal preview Doctor Who Any's Choice :

A heartfelt Who

By Alex Strachan, Canwest News Service June 5, 2010

Get out your hankies: Karen Gillan, who plays the Doctor's companion Amy Pond in the latest incarnation of Doctor Who, cites tonight's episode, Amy's Choice, as her favourite in the series so far.

As with so many things about this fantastic spin through time and space, the story's premise is both simple and complex -- tantalizingly, bewitchingly so.

The hour opens with Amy and her boyfriend Rory (Arthur Darvill) back home in Leadworth, England. It has been five years since their last adventure with the Doctor, and Amy is very, very pregnant. Life is good, if a tad dull. Then, one day, the Doctor suddenly drops by for a visit. They reminisce about the good times, listen peacefully to the birds chirping around them, fall asleep and -- wake up back on the TARDIS.

It was all a dream. Or was it?

A peculiar little man - - -the Dream Lord (Toby Jones) appears before them, and tells them they are moving back and forth in time, between a real world - - -world. Which is which? Choose well, and they get to live. Choose wrong, and they will all die. And so it begins. - - -clever, the story brisk and witty and the resolution is hard - - - but makes perfect sense in the end.

You don't have - - - sci-fi fan to enjoy Doctor Who. - - -adventure tale for kids of all ages: a madcap romp that posits a universe - - - women are just as tough, funny and resourceful - - - and people of all ages, races, colours and - - - -- unless they happen to - - - - Master or peculiar little men who call themselves Dream Lords.

Matt Smith, the 11th and youngest Doctor in Who's 47-year span, makes a dashing hero. It's hard to imagine anyone could make a fan forget David Tennant after just five episodes, but that's exactly what Smith has done. And Gillan is truly wonderful as the Doctor's sidekick.

When she glances down at her pregnant belly and tells the Doctor that Rory means everything to her, it's hard not to shed a tear. This is edge-of-the-seat, heartfelt entertainment. Just what the Doctor ordered. (Space -- 7 p. m.)
